Are we compatible? is the question astrology gets asked more than any other, and the popular answer — look up your two sun signs in a grid, receive a percentage — is the astrological equivalent of judging a book by the first letter of its title. The honest answer is more interesting: sign compatibility runs on a real geometric logic worth learning, and the sun-sign layer is only the top sheet of a much deeper comparison.

The engine: elements and modalities

All sign-matching talk compresses to two systems. Each sign has an element — fire, earth, air or water — naming the fuel it runs on, and a modality — cardinal, fixed or mutable — naming its style of action. • Same element: instant fluency. Two fire signs both process life through action; two water signs both lead with feeling. Little translation needed.
• Complementary elements: productive difference. Fire and air feed each other — action plus ideas — and earth and water do the same, structure plus feeling.
• Clashing elements: translation required. Fire with water, air with earth. Workable, but each side must learn the other's language on purpose.
• Same modality: friction with recognition. Two fixed signs both dig in; two cardinal signs both want the wheel. Collisions are loud precisely because the styles mirror each other.

The four angles of relationship
